Understanding The Internet

There are important things to know about the
Internet and design before beginning your project.

Our society has created an audience with a very short attention span. Statistics show that the average
time a person will stay on a site is approximately 10 seconds. So if you're still here something was done right.

Here are some of the things you need to do to keep them on your site. If you use flash or large graphics, which take too long to load, most people will leave without figuring out what your site is about.

Microsoft and HP know this.  Look at their sites. They want to reach the largest audience possible so pages must load fast, be clean and easy to navigate.

When a page opens people need to see the  information in front of them on the screen.

Research shows that people tend not to scroll down unless they have the information or product they are after- right in front of them.

People will also leave if  a page is  confusing or frustrating. Too many links, fly out menus you can't 'catch', scrolling back and forth at the bottom.

We have too many choices on the internet to stay on a site that is poorly planned and hard to follow.

Use professional looking design that frames your information and makes them want to see more.

To Sum it up:

Don't load up on elements that are slow to load like large graphics and flash

Catch their interest immediately in the top portion of your page.
Make your pages clean and easy to navigate
Have design that is interesting without detracting from your message
